New Hampshire Casino Expansion Stalls in Senate
NEW HAMPSHIRE --
The gambling industry in New Hampshire was dealt a blow this week as legislators rejected measures to add video lottery machines at the state's 4 race tracks.
The Senate voted 13-11 against allowing video lottery at tracks in Salem, Seabrook, Belmont and Hinsdale.
They also decided to add a tax to poker games such as Texas Hold'em.
Manchester politician Lou D'Allesandro, the sponsor, argued the state needs the millions of dollars gambling would provide for state programs and services. Opponents say the expansion of casino gambling in the area would increase crime, unemployment, and prostitution.
The state Senate voted 16-8 to increase tariffs for Texas Hold 'Em and other poker-related card games now being run by non-profit organizations.
Hudson Republican Bob Clegg said lawmakers should allow video lottery instead of taxing games run for charities.
Supporters of the bill pointed out that the state already gets a share of wagers on Bingo and Lucky Seven.
