New Slot Gambling Bill Advances in New Hampshire
CONCORD, NEW HAMPSHIRE --
A proposal to install slot machines at race tracks in the state passed the New Hampshire Senate yesterday. The chamber voted to allow the expanded gambling at six locations throughout the state.
The state Senators voted 15-9 in favor of allowing the introduction of slot machines. Operators of the state's three dog tracks, as well as the horse track at Rockingham Park, would be allowed to augment their gaming income with the attraction of casino gambling.
The bill still needs approval by the House, and the signature of Governor John Lynch. Lynch has been non-committal about gaming.
If the new measure is accepted, the horse track could receive as many as 5000 slots, with the other locations limited to 2000 slots each. Lawmakers are championing the gambling bill as a way to avoid some of the many service cuts and tax raises confronting the state.
The spending bill also contains other measures to raise fees and taxes, and may face opposition in part due to the non-gambling clauses.
"There were a number of issues in there, additional taxes and fees, that I couldn't support," says Senator Michael Downing, a supporter of adding slots.
