NASCAR Track Wants in on New Hampshire Gambling Plans
LOUDON, NEW HAMPSHIRE --
As various plans for expanded gambling circulate through the New Hampshire legislature, a new player has asked to be involved in the search for revenue to balance the state budget. The New Hampshire Motor Speedway wants to be included as a possible location for slots and casino gambling.
Jerry Gappens, general manager of the track, said Monday that Speedway Motorsports, the operating company for the track, wants lawmakers to consider a plan to place 750 slots and 24 tables for blackjack and other games in a casino to be constructed on the track's property.
Gappens estimates annual gambling revenue would be in the area of $45 million, with $16 million to go to the state in taxes.
The track hosts two NASCAR races a year, including a September race that begins the Chase for the Championship of the auto racing circuit. NASCAR officials have distanced themselves from other sports leagues by nonchalantly accepting the reality of gambling and accepting even betting on the sport.
New Hampshire legislators are examining plans to license several facilities for slot machine operation. Governor John Lynch has sworn to veto any expanded gambling plan that includes slots, and says he'd prefer to regulate online gambling.
