New Hampshire Gambling Bill Advances to House

By Lance Burkhart on March 28, 2010  Email it!    Print Version

Play Slots at Rushmore Casino! CONCORD, NEW HAMPSHIRE -- The New Hampshire Senate this week passed a bill to allow slots gambling and table gaming at state horse tracks. The casino gambling measure now moves to the state House, where it is expected to encounter resistance.

Lawmakers who voted for the bill, which passed on a 14-10 vote, defended their decision against protests from anti-gaming groups by asserting the state's need for revenue, and a need to create jobs for New Hampshire's unemployed. As usual, the issues of freedom and individual rights seem to be forgotten by both sides of the debate.

"The desire to move quickly to bring jobs to those who need them is paramount," said Senator Lou D'Allesandro, the bill's sponsor.

"It supports jobs and it provides revenue to avoid some of the suffering we are seeing," commented Senator Deb Reynolds.

Governor John Lynch insists even if the bill passes the House as well, he will refuse to sign it.  Lynch says he thinks the bill would lead to a proliferation of gambling, noting that six sites have been selected before the process has even been cleared.

"I will do what it takes to have it not become law," Lynch said.
