Nebraska OTB Gambling Bill Falls
LINCOLN, NEBRASKA --
A bill which would help Nebraska's struggling horse racing industry was defeated last week by the Nebraska legislature. The proposed measure would have allowed remote gambling on state horse racing at bars and other locations.
The legislation needed to advance to the full legislature, then acquire approval from voters on a state-wide ballot, and then receive the go-ahead from residents in each municipality wanting the satellite betting. But a vote to advance the bill out of debate failed by three votes.
Opponents used the tired and debunked rallying cry that a vote for expanded gambling is a vote against families. State Senator John Harris called animal racing a dying industry, and said the proposal would not suffice to save horse racing operations.
Senator Russ Karpisek, the author of the bill, denied the measure would expand gambling, and called it simply a new way to place bets on existing gaming. He said if the law wwre passed, it would generate $6 million annually for racing, funds which could be used to replace the decaying State Fair Park track in Lincoln.
According to Karpisek, over 2500 Nebraska jobs are supported by horse racing. He added that the industry creates an economic impact of more than $29 million for the state.
