NBA Player Settles Casino Gambling Debt for $13K Monthly
LAS VEGAS, NEVADA --
Former NBA All-Star Antoine Walker reached an agreement with three casinos holding almost a million dollars in unpaid markers from him. To settle the gambling debts, Walker forfeited the cash he had put up to bond himself out of prison, and agreed to pay $12,835 a month until all debts are satisfied.
Walker had been charged with three felonies for failure to pay gaming markers to Red Rock Resort, Planet Hollywood Casino, and Caesars Palace. Nevada law stipulates that unpaid markers are considered bad checks, and the Clark County District Attorney aggressively prosecutes them.
Walker owed the casinos $905,000. He gave up the $135,000 he had posted as his bond, and swore to keep up payments on the rest.
Although Walker played for years in the NBA, he hasn't made a team in two years, and his deal is contingent upon him remaining unemployed. If he should take a job in the NBA or elsewhere, his payment would rise to $21,391 a month.
Melanie Andress-Tobiasson, the Justice of the Peace who heard the case, told Walker he'd find himself back behind bars if he failed to hold up his end of the agreement. No explanation of how Walker would be able to pay in the future what he can't pay now was given.
