Mississippi Casino Riverboat Struck by Runaway Barge
NATCHEZ, MISSISSIPPI --
Thr riverboat casino at Natchez, Mississippi looking to open in the next few weeks may find itself behind schedule after a rogue fleet of barges floating downriver struck the casino among other impacts Monday night.
At least 24 barges came loose of their moorings and floated pilotless down the Mississippi River, hitting at least one pylon of the bridge across the river at Natchez, slamming into the casino boat, and sending rescue workers scurrying up and down the river seeking damage and renegade barges.
The Grand Soleil Casino, recently renamed after discarding the name Emerald Star, was nearly finished construction at the time of the incident. Although initially respondents felt it was likely the impact breached the riverboat's hull, further inspection left that conclusion less likely.
Water was found inside the casino boat, but it had not been determined if the water was due to the barge collision. Any leak that might have occurred had not been discovered, as the County Civil Defense Director attended to the safety and inspection of the bridge as the top priority.
The Grand Soleil will house 850 slots, 17 table games, and a poker room. An adjoining hotel will feature 124 rooms and two restaurants.
