Missouri Says Casino Must Reapply to Change Boats
ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI --
Missouri regulators told the operators of a riverboat casino they cannot change boats without surrendering the license and reapplying for it. Owners of the President Casino, which sits aboard the Admiral riverboat, want to replace the aging boat but expect to retain their gambling license.
Pinnacle Gaming, the operator of the casino, says the boat is aging and cannot pass certification to carry passengers when inspection comes due in 2019.
But the Missouri Gaming Commission says a ruling by the state's attorney general leaves their hands tied, as it specifically says state law requires licenses to be linked to a particular location and boat.
The legislative cap on casino licenses has left several communities without gaming, and civic leaders in these areas have pointed fingers at Pinnacle as employing licenses too close to each other to properly benefit the state. The gaming company operates the Lumiere Casino only blocks away from the President's location.
The Admiral is over a hundred years old, and is facing a major reconstruction to meet safety requirements. Pinnacle would prefer to simply switch boats, but certainly does not want to risk losing its license in a transfer gamble.
