Michigan Considers Banning Casino Smoking

By Brian Chan on May 11, 2008  Email it!    Print Version

Play Slots at Rushmore Casino! DETROIT, MICHIGAN -- The Michigan Senate has joined the ranks of those legislative bodies around the continent passing smoking bans that affect state-licensed casinos, and officials from those casinos are alarmed at the possible loss of revenue the proposed ban may cause.

Detroit's three casinos may lose as much as 10% in income or more, said MGM Grand Detroit Chief Operating Officer Lorenzo Creighton. Casino management was especially perturbed that the ban would not affect tribal casinos, rendering a competitive advantage to the Indian locations.

Canadian casinos near the Michigan border applauded the measure, as they have fallen under a ban placed on them by Ontario since 2006, and have since seen a steady stream of business flow into Detroit's smoky palaces.

Jacob Miklojcik, a Lansing consultant specializing in the gaming industry, pointed out the results of previous bans, both in Canada and Delaware. He stated, "There is a definite impact, and it's not irrelevant."

Management from Greektown Casino and MotorCity Casino withheld comment until they could review the bill.

Opponents also pointed out that losses for the casinos meant losses for the state, which receives huge revenues from casino taxes.

No matter the persistence of the smoking Nazis, it seems smokers will continue to search out places that allow them freedom of choice. If legislators continue to be determined to enforce their will over the rights of citizens, then the karma they have invoked will come due when the state's coffers feel the pinch of decreased gambling revenues.
