Massachusetts Residents Want Casino Gambling, Says Poll
DARTMOUTH, MASSACHUSETTS --
A new survey of people living in Massachusetts found a distinct majority would be in favor of building at least two full-service casinos in the state. The New England Gaming Behavior Survey found that proponents of expanding gambling to bring licensed casinos complete with table games and slots outnumber opponents by almost two to one.
The poll, conducted by the Center for Policy Analysis at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, asked whether the state legislature should authorize two or more resort casinos in the state, with choices available as "yes", "no", and "don't know."
Fifty-seven percent responded affirmatively, while only thirty-one percent said no.
Eleven percent were unsure.
The survey also showed that state residents thought such a move would help to recapture potential revenues currently crossing state borders to Connecticut and Rhode Island casinos.
Support for establishing licensed casinos has been strong within the state since Governor Deval Patrick floated a plan last year to introduce three casinos, only to see political maneuvering block the measure.
