Suffolk Downs Lobbies for Massachusetts Casino License
BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS --
The lack of a decision on the number of casinos and the types of gambling permitted if gaming is expanded in Massachusetts hasn't stopped a local race track from announcing plans for a potential casino at its location. Suffolk Downs revealed detailed blueprints for a lavish resort casino to be built on its premises, if owners can convince lawmakers to award them a license.
According to the released plans, the casino would include a hotel, gym, spa, restaurants and retail space, as well as a gambling floor containing 5000 slots and 200 table games. A retro architectural style would be featured, using fashions from Boston designs of a hundred years ago.
“We wanted a concept consistent with the traditions of New England, the character of the area, and our 75-year legacy as a racetrack,’’ said Richard Fields, Suffolk Downs’s principal owner.
Fields has already helped develop the Seminole tribal casino resorts in Tampa and Hollywood, Florida. The two, both under the Seminole-controlled Hard Rock brand, are luxurious creations rivalling Las Vegas casinos.
The Massachusetts House and Senate have to work out a compromise gambling bill, as one has two casino licenses while the other specifies three. Either way, Suffolk Downs executives know they face fierce competition, and are trying to get a jump ahead of other prospective sites.
