Liberal Massachusetts Can't Accept Freedom at Casinos
BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS --
Debate is raging in the Massachusetts legislature over the operating terms under which any casino licensees must run gambling floors. Although the state's lawmakers seem relatively united in the need for revenue which casinos and slots gambling can bring, the state's liberal politics dictate that normal casino privileges may be refused.
Gambling, smoking, and drinking, three liberties that politicians who support the rights of society rather than individual freedom often try to control through government, are all elements in successful casino operation. Yet proposals are running rampant in the Massachusetts Houses that wouyld ban smoking, eliminate comped drinks, and place severe closing times as early as midnight on gaming operations.
Rather than allow consumers to make their own choices, Massachusetts has a history of deciding what's best for its citizenry. The state has a strict smoking ban, and laws against discounted or free alcoholic drinks.
Now some legislators want casinos, symbolically islands of liberty in oceans of restriction, to match politically correct sensitivities.
"I think that we're trying to engineer a politically correct casino, and almost by their nature casinos have elements that make some people uncomfortable," Senator Bruce Tarr said.
Casino customers would say those people have the freedom to endulge themselves elsewhere, just as television viewers can change the channel if they don't enjoy programming.
