Maryland Slots Casinos Face Lukewarm Demand
BALTIMORE, MARYLAND --
Maryland spent years fighting over legislation to legalize slot machines and allow state regulators to issue casino licenses. Now that the gambling permits are available, fewer bidders than hoped have materialized to jump-start gaming revenues for the state.
This week, a state commission awarded a casino license to Penn National Gaming to operate a slot facility near the Pennsylvania border. The gaming company will begin construction next week, with an opening of the proposed 1500 machine casino in the latter part of next year, said a Penn National spokesman.
But two other prospective sites have failed to resolve zoning issues and operators still owe licensing fees necessary to proceed. A casino that could host 4750 slots in Anne Arundel County is logged down by a county zoning battle that may take months to clear.
And a proposed casino in Baltimore, which could host as many as 3750 slots, awaits the payment of almost $20 million in licensing fees and the submission of revised blueprints and planning needed for commission approval.
Lawmakers who expected ferocious demand for the casino licenses are now growing impatient and have set a December 17th date for the two projects to meet requirements or be denied.
