Maryland Considers Table Gambling to Keep Up with Joneses
BALTIMORE, MARYLAND --
Baltimore Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake came out in favor of adding table gambling to Maryland's new slot gaming on Friday. Maryland had voted to add slots to race track gambling to stay competitive with Delaware and Pennsylvania tracks, only to see those states add table games in a battle of escalation.
Rawlings-Blake told Baltimore's state representatives that the city needed to add blackjack, baccarat, and other table games to keep city gambling venues competitive "not only in the state, but within the region."
The mayor added that in her opinion, alleged social costs would be far outweighed by revenue sorely needed by the city. She said she is open to discussion and not glued ideologically to either side of the issue.
Rawlings-Blake noted that table gambling would only take place at parlors already approved for slot gambling, and said she could not see a significant difference in allowing one form of gaming and not another. The previous mayor, Sheila Dixon, has already said she was surprised table games were not part of the original package.
The commission overseeing the slots gambling has recommended the state add the table games to its casinos, saying the state is already trailing its competitor neighbors.
While table games do not necessarily directly contribute huge revenues, they do help draw patrons who play slots, and create more high-paying jobs than slots.
