Petition Calls for Casino Gambling in Stephen King Country
AUGUSTA, MAINE --
Maine lawmakers have been presented with a petition signed by over 100,000 residents asking that casino gambling in the state be expanded. The proposal suggests creating a license for a casino in Oxford County in western Maine.
According to Maine law, at least 10 percent of the number of voters in the last gubernatorial election must sign any petition seeking a place on the electoral ballot. The gambling initiative has almost double the number needed.
Several recent measures to bring new casinos to the state have been badly defeated in state voting. However, drafters of the current circular say much of the objectionable terms of the last proposal, such as a lowering of legal gambling age, have been eliminated from the new measure.
Proponents say the casino, if created, will bring as many as 1000 new jobs to the area. Peter Martin, a spokesman for organizations backing the casino petition, said the casino could generate $32 million annually for education.
The area of the state suggested for the casino is near the supposed location of many of author Stephen King's fictional towns, such as Castle Rock and Salem's Lot. But state residents who find the real-life terrors of unemployment and illiteracy scarier than vampires and possessed dogs are lining up to sign the call for new casinos.
