Gambling Pays Off From Beyond the Grave
DANPORT, CONNECTICUT --
A Connecticut man left his widow an unexpected death benefit of $10 million dollars. Donald Peters bought lottery tickets for the next ten weeks on November 1st, only to suffer a fatal heart attack later that day.
Charlotte Peters, his seventy-eight-year-old widow, put the tickets aside while she and her family coped with the grief from Donald's sudden death. But last week, Charlotte happened to have the tickets on her while at a local store, and asked the clerk to check them.
One of the tickets, for the December 2nd drawing, was the jackpot winner, and paid out $10 million over twenty years. Charlotte was shocked at her gambling fortune, and was thankful she had not followed an earlier impulse to just throw the tickets out.
When asked her plans, at the top of Peters' list was a visit to the Mohegan Sun Casino. Obviously, she doesn't need casino gambling to support herself, but the enjoyment and excitement of playing is still an attraction to her.
Connecticut Lottery officials said she could take yearly payments of about $477,300, or take a $6 million lump sum payment up front. Peters has two months to decide which route she prefers.
Donald Peters may not have lived to enjoy his new fortune, but somewhere he lies peacefully, knowing he left his family set for generations, through the luck of gambling.
