Kansas Hopes To Name Casino Operators Before They Disappear
TOPEKA, KANSAS --
If Kansas regulators drag their feet any longer over deciding which operators will partner with the state in its proposed casino businesses, there may not be any interested applicants left. While the Kansas Lottery Gaming Facility Review Board has spent the better part of a year eliminating none of its prospective partners for casinos in four counties, changing conditions have led to some applicants losing desire to build in the Jayhawk State.
Citing increased competition from the recently opened Quapaw casino on the Oklahoma border, as well as potential loss of traveling customers due to a proposed change in Missouri's loss-limit law, Las Vegas Sands withdrew from the field of possible licensees.
Further, Penn National Gaming indicated, as the only applicant for Cherokee County, it might no longer want to operate so close to the Quapaw venue unless the deal to work Cherokee were partnered with the Sumner County license.
After spinning wheels and going through various rubber-stamp meetings, the Board is finally nearing a deadline to name its managers for the state-owned casino projects. On August 21st and 22nd, the operators for Cherokee and Sumner will be revealed; on September 18th and 19th, licensees for Ford and Wyandotte Counties will be chosen.
Missouri's decision to consider removing its maximum loss limit means that many who might travel to Kansas will be far more likely to stay home. And, by constructing and opening its casino while Kansas twiddled its thumbs, the Quapaw Tribe has the advantage of establishing itself while the kansas project is still a pipe dream.
