Iowa Still Searching for Ways to Expand Gambling
DES MOINES, IOWA --
Gambling and casinos have been so good to Iowa, state lawmakers are searching to find ways to continue gambling expansion, even as 21 casinos operate in the state. A new gambling bill may create more revenue by changing the rules on gaming areas at existing casinos.
Legislators are likely to agree to allow casinos to use gathering areas such as convention and ballroom space as added gambling room, for events such as poker tournaments. House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy stated on the "Iowa Press" television show that the measure should pass.
The bill, according to McCarthy, will not include a proposal to permit video gambling at bars. Lawmakers agreed casinos would suffer if this change were made.
"That proposal appears to be dead at this point and will not move forward," McCarthy said.
Still, early estimates are that just the regulation changes included may generate $25 million. McCarthy said he expected the legislation to be considered within the next two months.
