Indiana Lawmakers Receive Casino Gambling Report
INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA --
A group of Indiana legislators submitted a report to assembled lawmakers Tuesday, covering the state's options for future casino gambling. The Gaming Study Committee returned suggestions and predicted results for various ways for the state to tweak its gambling laws.
The committee says that expanding gambling to cities or counties without it is not in the state's best interest. But adjustments should be made to better realize the potential of existing casinos and gambling, the panel said.
Allowing casinos to drop the requirement that they be based on water would help properly locate casinos to guard against losses to neighboring states, the committee recommended. The finding is also that Gary's two riverboats may work best as a single inland casino, with the second license returning to the state.
"As in any other industry, particularly those that cater to retail consumers, it's all about location," said Sen. Luke Kenley, the co-chairman of the study committee.
Other suggestions include charging riverboats moving to land-based operations a fee, and dropping the taxes levied on revenue at racinos that is used as a subsidy to the horse racing industry.
