Illinois Voters Want Infrastructure But Not Gambling
CHICAGO, ILLINOIS --
Like most voters, Illinois residents like the idea of having cake and eating it too, as demonstrated by poll results showing they oppose the legalization of video gambling and poker machines, which would fund a $30 billion infrastructure commitment. No alternative method of payment for the bill was suggested, leaving the video gambling devices as the only way to raise the money needed to build new roads and schools.
Many communities have voted to opt out and keep the traditional bar gaming machines illegal. None, however, have voted to opt out of the benefits planned for Illinois infrastructure.
Considering the proliferation of the gaming machines already, albeit theoretically "just for amusement," many felt the poll was misleading the public as to the question. What was phrased as a choice between gambling machines or no machines is really a choice between legal and regulated gambling machines or mob-run, potentially crooked machines.
Voters said in the Chicago Tribune poll that slightly more than half believed gambling expansions had been good for the state, 40 percent to 37. But 58 percent said they'd oppose video gambling in their locality, with 34 percent in favor.
Oddly enough, the staunchest opposition to legal gambling in Illinois came from Republicans and African-Americans.
