Computer Generated Horses May Be Next Gamble in Idaho
BOISE, IDAHO --
Racetracks in Idaho are trying to find the means to stay afloat, and one plan involves betting on imaginary horses. If rumors of crooked racing are constantly in the undercurrent at tracks featuring live racing, just wait until only cyberhorses are running.
Les Bois Park in Boise, Idaho, has tried to get state officials to consider the allowance of gambling on computer-generated horses. The track tried to bypass the legislature, contending that the change from racing of actual horses was a minor one, needing only administrative approval.
But state legislators, and a rival track featuring greyhound races, believe that only a legal change by lawmakers would permit the introduction of the cyberhorses. Lawyers for Coeur d'Alene Racing are seeking slots and lottery tickets exclusive to tracks, and think the park has fouled up the process.
However, the dog track can be accused of similar reasoning to the horse racing venue. No live dogs run anymore at he Greyhound Park & Event Center in Post Falls anymore; only simulcasting is involved.
If legislators are determined to help save a historic industry like animal racing, perhaps a requirement should be animals. It seems track owners nationwide have used their track affiliation to stretch the bounds of gambling laws, while paying only lip service to the support of track-generated jobs and revenue.
