Louisiana Casinos Survive Hurricane Gustav
NEW ORLEANS --
Hurricane Gustav swept through Louisiana yesterday leaving behind little damage to area casinos and gaming facilities. The storm first touched-land as a Category 2 hurricane, but quickly weakened to a Category 1.
Casino managers and staff were preparing for the worst, as were most local area businesses and homeowners.
"We didn't evacuate the area, mainly because of the threat of looting and vandalism in the aftermath", said one employee of the Harrah's New Orleans Casino. The Harrah's New Orleans Casino is located just steps away from the French Quarter and minutes from the Superdome.
The 100,000 square-foot gaming facility and hotel was largely unaffected by the storm.
Despite what you may hear in some media outlets, Hurricane Gustav left behind little damage in Lousiana, and almost none in New Orleans. The biggest safety concern was the breaching of the levee in New Orleans, a super-structure that stood up to the test.
It will be days and possibly weeks before we have all the damage estimates tallied, but one thing is for sure, Gustav was no repeat of Katrina.
