Gambling and Horse Racing Center of New HBO Show
LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA --
Two of the most critically acclaimed names in Hollywood are teaming up to bring a show based on horse racing and gambling to HBO. David Milch will write the new series, while Michael Man will direct the pilot of the betting program.
The show is titled "Luck," and will feature an ensemble cast of characters at a race track setting. Plots will evolve around horse owners and trainers, gambling and bettors, and people who work at the track.
Milch is known as the creator of "NYPD Blue," as well as the HBO series "Deadwood," which dealt with gambling, prospecting, and vice in the early days of the South Dakota mining town. He left that show to do "John from Cincinnati," a confused surfer-new age picture that only lasted one season before being cancelled.
Mann is the director who brought TV "Miami Vice," as well as the movies "Last of the Mohicans," "Heat," "The Insider," and most recently "Public Enemies." His work is noted for its visual panoramas and cinematography.
Casting and scheduling for the show has not been made public by HBO.
While horse racing has not been the setting for a TV series, there have been movies that used tracks as locations, including the Richard Dreyfus comedy "Let It Ride" and the classic "The Sting."
