Hard Rock Announces Plans for Atlantic City Casino
ATLANTIC CITY, NEW JERSEY --
Fresh off the news Atlantic City is looking to add four new modern boutique casinos, Hard Rock International announced it would build and operate one of the new gambling venues. The company, owned by Seminole Gaming, would spend $300 million placing a casino at the southern end of the boardwalk.
New Jersey is expected to pass a new bill lowering the room requirement for hotel-casinos down to 200 from the present minimum of 500. Thew concept is to invite the operation of exclusive, luxurious casinos catering strictly to high-rollers.
Hard Rock Chairman Jim Allen says the project would have amenities including "an ultramodern gaming floor, luxury hotel, world-class dining and entertainment, a beachfront pool and a spa."
New Jersey lawmakers see the boutique casino concept as a way out of the financial downturns besetting Atlantic City's gambling industry. Supporters of the bill cite the enormous cost of building mega-resorts as impractical at this time, while more affordable hotels can actually offer greater luxury to a select list of guests, the whales all casinos seek.
Operators of existing casinos gave mixed reactions. Some say allowing new companies to enter the gaming market without equal investment is unfair. But others, including Harrah's Entertainment, cite the need for fresh thinking in Atlantic City and are willing to give the boutiques a chance to distinguish themselves.
