West Virginia Resort to Install Casino Gambling
WHEELING, WEST VIRGINIA --
A West Virginia hotel that has been the center for years of a debate on bringing casino gambling to the area will soon open a casino on the premises. The Greenbrier resort will install slot machines and table games in time to begin operations early next spring.
Jim Justice, the new owner of the facility, plans to build an underground casino gaming floor underneath the expansive front lawn of the historic complex. Justice decided to abandon plans by previous owners to convert a bunker designed to hold national leaders in case of nuclear attack into a casino.
Local opposition has focused on the social ills of gambling, while resort operators have said gaming may be the only means to support the resort and make it viable once again.
Justice bought out the shares of the operator of the bankrupt Greenbrier, CSX, thereby giving control of the hotel without having to participate in an assets auction or face other bidders. He then moved to withdraw the bankruptcy filing and took over the resort.
The Greenbrier will open a temporary gaming area this September, as a preliminary for the full casino opening slated for April of 2010.
