US Government Workers Forbidden Sports Gambling Pools
WASHINGTON, D.C. --
A report in Monday's Washington Post says federal employees are denied access to the paper's open contest involving the college basketball championship tournament. Government employees are not permitted gambling or betting rights, and are being warned to avoid office pools.
This blatant refusal to accept reality is being enforced throughout the US government. While tens of millions will take their chances gambling on March Madness office pools, federal employees are expected to hide their heads in the sand and pretend the practice is not ubiquitous.
Federal regulations say any persons on duty on government-owned property are barred from gambling, unless it is a necessary part of his duties. The rules apply to contractors, vendors, and ,members of the general public on US properties.
Virtually every office in the country will have pools running during the March Madness fortnight. ESPN and the Post are but two of hundreds of respected media outlets featuring contests involving picking proper brackets.
Yet somehow, the government deceives itself much like the NFL does regarding sports betting, denying what is clearly evident to all.
The end result is a loss of respect for government. Post blogger Dan Steinberg refers to the government policy as "high comedy," not necessarily words one wants to hear about institutions controlling taxation and spending. Some might suggest it's time for a reality check for US protocol designers.
