Casinos Unharmed as Earthquake Shakes Midwest
CHICAGO, IL --
Liquor bottles rattled at the bar, wine glasses chimed against each other, and roof tiles shook loose from the facilities, but overall, casinos in the Midwest faired extremely well despite a 5.2 magnitude earthquake occurring in Southern Illinois on Friday. Unfortunately for local gamblers, no slot machines decided to pour out coins mistakenly, either.
Very little damage was caused across the region, including no reported deaths. During the initial reports, some had antipicated serious problems across the Midwest as little information was available at first.
Scientists reported several aftershocks following the initial earthquake, including one with a magnitude of 4.6. Experts are calling the earthquake a 'tremor', something that Californians live with on a routine basis.
As for casino owners in this part of the country, well, they are feeling even luckier today as mother nature (if you call it that) decided to play a little nicer today, leaving the area with little damage.
As you know, most of the casinos in the Chicago area are of the 'Riverboat' assortment. In 1990, the Riverboat Gambling Act legalized riverboat gambling in Illinois. The Act allows for riverboat gambling upon any water within or on the border of the State of Illinois, other than Lake Michigan. Chicago area riverboats are located on the Des Plaines, Fox, Illinois and Mississippi Rivers.
