Fun is Target as Casino Comped Drinks Criticized
LAS VEGAS, NEVADA --
Casinos across the US have become a polarizing area for those who believe in freedom and individual choice, and those who believe in forcing others to live as they live. Gambling itself is a source of division between the two groups, along with smoking and the latest point of discussion, comped cocktails.
Civic groups comprised of the same evangelical religious types who have sought to prevent gambling now wish to force casinos to charge for all alcohol, on the basis that drinking is harmful to society. Despite the repudiation of Prohibition some eighty years ago, certain aspects of society think their decisions are so good, others should be inconvenienced and harrassed for choosing a different path.
Ohio lawmakers voted recently to ban free drinks at the state's new casino, and to close casino bars at 2:30 in the morning. Las Vegas casinos are famous for supplying complimentary drinks for players, and for serving around the clock.
"I do believe Midwest culture supports not serving alcohol freely, on a 24/7 basis," says the executive director of the Ohio chapter of Mothers Against Drunk Drivers. "It's seen for the damage it does to communities."
Just as opponents of online gambling ramble on about damage done to the community without producing a shred of evidence, so now the same people are railing about social costs without scientific backing. With smoking and drinking mainstays of the gambling environment, it appears there is a force in the US determined to prevent fun.
