Gambling Scandal NBA Ref Writes Book
TALLAHASSEE, FLORIDA --
Former NBA referee Tim Donaghy has been released from prison in Florida, where he served out his sentence for his part in a gambling scandal that rocked the basketball league. Donaghy also announced he has an upcoming book detailing the inner workings of NBA officiating, including news of particular interest to gambling patrons.
Donaghy admitted giving tips to sports betting associates on NBA games while he was actively officiating. He served just over a year in prison, and now looks to generate revenue from his book to cover about $100,000 in fines he owes.
Excerpts from the book have been published at deadspin.com, confirming some of the most persistent rumors about NBA referees and the league office. Donaghy admits the league promotes a star system, purposely calling fouls on average players while allowing star scorers free reign.
Donaghy also acknowledges personal feuds among players and refs that influence game results. He says he knew to bet certain ways based on games that included both participants in a feud.
"If Javie was on the court when Iverson was playing, I would always bet on the other team to win or at least cover the spread," Donaghy says, noting official Steve Javie's dislike for player Allen Iverson.
Donaghy's notes on how Dick Bavetta would call fouls on the better team to keep games close has to be among David Stern's worst nightmares, along with Donaghy's statement that Bavetta told him that Bavetta was assigned to games to make sure a certain team won. Sports betting corruption appears like nothing compared to the institutionalized fixing of games by the league office.
