Democrats Attack McCain Ties to Gambling, Casinos
WASHINGTON, D.C. --
After a Sunday New York Times article detailing John McCain's enjoyment of craps and long history championing Indian rights, Democratic strategists are attempting to use the details to disenchant the religious right.
Even though many independent and centrist voters may find McCain's gambling habit to be a humanizing touch, and something they relate to, many of the Christian conservatives consider casinos and gambling the cause of social ills.
Still, the strategy seems questionable by the Democrats. To point out McCain's hefty role in the development of tribal casinos as an economic engine for a native population living in poverty doesn't strike the average American as a weakness.
And to label McCain as a gambler makes him less a stuffed shirt preaching with the radical religious fringe of the Republican Party, and more a man of the people.
Trying to show far right Republicans that McCain's behavior is that of a moderate risks drawing the attention of more moderates while not disaffecting too many conservatives.
McCain might have problems in his campaign, but defending gambling should not be an issue. If Democrats wish to sway undecided votes, they would do better to illuminate connections between McCain and the religious right, not differences.
