Delaware Casinos Look to Asian Customers
DOVER, DELAWARE --
Delaware casino operators, anxious to make up expected revenue lost when federal courts prevented the implementation of full sports betting, are now turning to the Asian market to booster sales. Following the lead of several Las Vegas gambling resorts, Delaware wants ambiance and activities to cater to Asian-Americans, a demographic noted for a traditional gaming culture.
Patrons of Asian descent do not flock to slots, but prefer Pai-Gow and baccarat, according to an article in Delaware Online. The state's casinos are not only including dining and entertainment options preferable to an Asian clientele, but also making sure to have plenty of table space for the Oriental games.
The recent move to allow table gaming in Delaware allows casino operators to target the Asian market. Table games were granted by the legislature, which is eager to recoup revenue it thought sports betting would provide.
According to John Finamore, the regional head for Penn National Gaming, Asians in the Baltimore area comprise a population of over half a million. Many had previously gone to Atlantic City or Las Vegas to play favored games.
Despite protests from responsible gaming groups that such moves are racist, casino executives say accommodating patrons is just good business sense, and if a certain market responds favorably to certain games and ambiance, the casinos will act accordingly.
