Delaware Governor Pushes Sports Parlay Wagers
DOVER, DELAWARE --
The newly elected Governor of Delaware, Jark Markell, is determined to pursue a legal plan for sports gambling in his state. Legislators have openly broached the subject, and Markell has thrown his full support behind the idea.
Delaware lawmakers have been concerned since the passage last month of a Maryland referendum placing slots at horse racing tracks. Slots installed in Pennsylvania a year earlier had already kept home potential Delaware gambling tourists. The Maryland law threatens to cut even deeper into Delaware revenues from gambling.
Delaware is permitted to operate sports betting by a clause in federal law that grandfathered in the states that had previously allowed a form of sports gambling, those being Nevada, Montana, Oregon, and Delaware.
One clarification of what may be proposed in Delaware came from the assertion of the senior vice president of Spectrum Gaming Group. Joe Weinert said the state's plan was to only accept parlay plays, and not allow straight bets.
Of course, while parlays pay better than 10-11, the house edge is even greater. So, once again, an activity like sports gambling is seen as immoral, wrong, and filled with social ills... unless the government runs it, in which case not only is the activity condoned, but the edge against the player is significantly increased.
