Dania Jai-Alai Slots Plan Called Off
DANIA BEACH, FL --
A new casino filled with slot machines planned for Dania Jai-Alai in South Florida was called-off by company officials. A company spokesperson for Boyd Gaming, owner of the Jai-Lai arena, said that poor South Florida economic conditions, including an exorbitant state tax rate, the consistent lackluster performance by three other area slots parlors, and intensive competition from Seminole Indian casinos, all factored into the decision to cancel the project.
Dania Jai-Alai and Boyd Gaming will indefinitely postpone plans to develop the new slot-machine casino. Jai-Alai is a sport with its origins in Spanish-speaking countries. It looks similar to racquetball, but is played with a hand-held wicker basket instead of a flat racquet.
Dania Jai-Alai won voter approval back in 2005 to allow slot machines at its sporting events. The caveat to the deal - Dania Jai Alai would be forced to pay a 50% tax on all slot machine sales to the state of Florida.
Despite the project being cancelled now, Boyd Gaming representatives left-open the possibility this deal could happen sometime in the future. Communications coordinator Robert Stillwell said, "The plans are not permanently cancelled. If the market conditions change, we will definitely take another look."
The cancelling of the project is does not bode-well for Boyd Gaming, who is looking to rebound after a poor 4th quarter earnings announcement yesterday.

I'm so sorry to hear the bad news that the slot machine project is not going to happen at this time. Give a little bit more time I feel the economy will change and the owners can take another look at the project and make it happen.

I would like to comment on the tournament that just took place of this weekend.
The tornaments should be placed on video and uploaded to the Jai-alai sites so that they can be viewed by people that are not able to get the Florida.
Thank you
