Task Force Says Universities Need Problem Gambling Policies
NEW YORK, NEW YORK --
A group put together to study gambling on collge campuses says that institutes of higher learning need to address potential problem gambling with written procedures. According to the Task Force on College Gambling Policies, gambling issues are often ignored by schools.
The task force is commissioned by the Cambridge Health Alliance to study the effects of gambling on student life. It determined that, while most schools are prepared to combat alcohol and drug problems, many have little or no planning for gambling treatment and education.
The group recommends treating problem gambling as another health concern, and devising written policies that help educate students about the pitfalls of gambling, as well as offering counseling for those suffering from compulsive gambling.
According to figues released in a report Tuesday, the task force discovered that, while more than half of all college students have placed bets within the last year, only twenty-two percent of colleges surveyed had instituted policies regarding gambling.
