Christian University Bends Gambling Ethics for Self-Benefit
SEARCY, ARKANSAS --
Harding University in Arkansas, a Christian school, has strict rules prohibiting students from gambling. But school officials have decided to allow participation in the state lottery, which will fund both public and private universities, including Harding.
The school is noted for a severe code of conduct for its students, which forbids pornography, drinking, smoking, and commands a dress code. Intermingling among thwe sexes in the dorms, in which males and females are separately housed, is forbidden, and even dyeing one's hair can earn a summons to the dean.
But the school has decided to make an exception for the lottery, confusing because there seems to be no outcry for the lottery in particular of the many rights stripped from students. Infact, some students are quick to point out the hypocrisy involved in accepting a gambling loophole.
"It will definitely influence the way people think about Harding," Harding student Nathan Warmath told THV-TV. "Now, they will think Harding has double standards and is willing to change the rule to benefit themselves."
University representatives said the school neither condones nor encourages playing the lottery. Of course not; it merely permits it, something it doesn't do for other gambling or any other activity it doesn't encourage which doesn't happen to benefit it.
