Charity Too Good For Gambling Donation

By Brian Chan on September 14, 2008  Email it!    Print Version

Play Slots at Rushmore Casino! NEW YORK, NEW YORK -- Some people prefer to cut off their noses to spite their faces. Such an act was committed by the Lighthouse Mission, a New York charity which rejected a $3 million donation because the money came from gambling winnings. An anonymous donor wished to share his jackpot, but Lighthouse said no.

The charity estimates it provides food for 3000 destitute residents of Long Island weekly. The money could have provided prime rib dinners for every one of the charity's petitioners, with all the fixings, for the next six months. Certainly these people will be happy the charity supervisors considered the money tainted, and chose balogna sandwiches as a sign of their holier-than-thou principles.

James Ryan, the mission's pastor, said the message sent could have been confusing as his organization counsels against all addictions, including gambling. By this logic, Ryan must turn down donations from anyone who has ever had a drink, or risk promoting alcoholism; reject pledges from anyone who has ever had a sexual experience, or be seen as advocating sexual addiction; and refuse money from anyone who has used a pharmaceutical drug, or let people believe he's for drug abuse.

It's great that Ryan feels so principled and moral that he won't accept money that he deems tainted, too bad he's willing to sacrifice his parrishoners for his high standards.

Your facts are totally wrong on this one in so many ways, including who the winner of the lottery was. So much for your ability to get the facts straight.
