Gambling Becoming Major Income for Charities

By Brian Chan on February 20, 2009  Email it!    Print Version

Play Slots at Rushmore Casino! DETROIT, MICHIGAN -- Casino gambling continues to expand across the US as governments eye gaming as a revenue alternative to higher taxes. Now, organizations that survive on voluntary contributions are saying that gambling events are needed to fill their coffers as well.

According to a report by the Chicago Tribune, the Michigan Lottery granted 681 licenses for temporary casino gambling at charity events in 2004. In 2008, that number had grown to 4043.

Charities in Michigan earned $3.6 million from gaming in 2004. By 2008, that number had ballooned to $10.5 million. Including other gambling revenue that didn't involve the special occasion casino games, lotteries took in $75.1 million from games of chance last year.

The events have grown so popular, the Michigan Lottery is advising applicants the office for reviewing submissions is swamped, and to expect the process to take up to six weeks.

Both state lawmakers and operators of the state's three permanent casinos say the trend has grown out of control, and limits need to be set. Rick Kalm, executive director of the Michigan Gaming Control Board, said, "There's not a problem with charitable gaming if it's run the way it was designed to run. We think that it's getting a little out of control."
