Baseball Picher Arrested for Unpaid Casino Gambling Markers

Play Slots at Rushmore Casino! GREELEY, COLORADO -- Shawn Chacon, a one-time All Star pitcher who played with an assortment of major league teams, was arrested Monday night for failing to honor gaming markers he owed to a Las Vegas casino. Chacon is the latest of several athletes, including the NBA's Charles Barkley and Antoine Walker, to face legal trouble for not paying back money borrowed from casinos to gamble.

The warrant for Chacon was released last wee, and he was captured Monday at a bowling alley in Greeley, Colorado. According to Greeley police, Clark County authorities in Nevada are asking for $165,000 bail.

That amount is the reported sum of Chacon's debt. He took out three markers with Caesars Palace last March for $50,000 each, bringing his debt to the casino to $150,000.

Clark County considers unpaid gaming markers the equivalent of bad checks. The district attorney's office charges a ten percent fee on returned check collections, raising Chacon's total obligation to $165,000.

Chacon played for the Pittsburgh Pirates, the New York Yankees, and the Colorado Rockies, before being released last year by the Houston Astros after a physical confrontation with general manager Ed Wade. Chacon attempted a comeback with Oakland this year but failed to make the major league team.
