Casino Workers March in Atlantic City to Support Union

Play Slots at Rushmore Casino! ATLANTIC CITY, NEW JERSEY -- Atlantic City casino workers, newly wed to the United Auto Workers union, and supporters staged a march earlier today to protest slow negotiations with casino management. Although many prominent politicians and union leaders attended, the results of the demonstration could be seen as mixed; of 5000-plus marchers expected, only about 3000 attended.

The union has striven to organize all eleven Atlantic City casinos. So far, Caesars, Ballys, Trump Plaza, and the Tropicana all had workers vote for union representation. The recently sold Trump Marina and the Hilton both had votes go against the union.

Since electing the union to represent them, staff members at the four casinos have been waiting for the settlement of a new labor contract, but casino representatives have been reluctant to make concessions.

Talks have been ongoing for a year or more for some locations, and yet no significant progress has been announced.

Saturday's parade, which led police to cordon off streets from auto traffic and lasted three hours, was designed as a public display of determination on the part of workers to get the contracts they feel they deserve.

Governor Jon Corzine, Senator Robert Menendez, United Auto Workers president Ron Gettlefinger and AFL-CIO president John J. Sweeney were all in attendance.

A written message from Democratic Presidential nominee Barack Obama urged that labor and management compromise and come to a solution.

Casino management was not seen flying a white flag following the march.
