South Dakota Casino Exercises Choice to Go Non-Smoking
MITCHELL, SOUTH DAKOTA --
While casinos around the country are stripped of their rights to run their businesses as they see fit, one gambling venue in South Dakota relishes being able to make its own decision. As of Monday, January 5th, Blarney's Pub and Casino will no longer permit smoking, withy the exception of an outdoor area and an enclosed room containing video lottery terminals.
Owners of the casino said they made the choice out of concern for customer health, but other rearks show the importance of the economic impact. Joel Van Dover, one of the proprietors of the gambling house, told the Daily Republic that Blarney's always fills its current non-smoking section first.
Van Dover went on to say that other patrons left rather than sit in sections that allowed smoking. Clearly, the free market worked well in this case, as entrepreneurs moved to respond to the wishes of clientele.
Many states have instituted laws forcing casinos to ban smoking from gaming areas. Even though anti-smoking advocates say that revenues should not suffer from making the casinos smoke-free, results have been markedly different.
For instance, Illinois casino analysts are attributing a twenty percent falloff in revenue to smoking bans imposed by the state. Delaware, Colorado, and Atlantic City also have released data indicating a major drop in play following the implementation of smoking laws.
But, as public tastes change, voluntary decisions to reduce or remove smoking areas from casinos will be made as purely smart business moves. Government interference only prevents casinos from giving players the conditions they desire.

| The story I read does not change a thing in there casino. Van Dover said in a Daily Republic of Mitchell story that customers are still allowed to smoke in his casino, and he felt that taking smoking away from his video lottery casino would be "devastating" Anyone that has visited this business would have to agree that he did the right thing for his bar and restaraunt, while keeping his casino business in place. So smoking was never removed from Blarneys Pub and Casino. The casino is closed off and still allows smoking. Keep up the great work, love the web page! |

The truth about the 32 day smoking ban in Atlantic City! There was more traffic on the Atlantic City Express way(WE HAVE PROOF). The Casino's stopped giving away FREE GIFTS on Monday through Thursday, but we were still busy. The Casino's took pictures of DEAD AREAS (at 8 am) when these areas are always dead! The Casino Exectutives bullied City Council into have a secret emergancy meeting, where they reversed their vote to go back to 75/25 smoking. This does not work! This is like having 25 people out of a 100 that are smoking in the back of a plane. The plane is sealed, so everybody will breath the smoke! It does not work on a plane and it does not work in the Casino! The bottom line here is SMOKING IS A HEALTH ISSUE ON A FINANCIAL ISSUE! Smokers do not go to the Casino's to smoke, they go to the Casino's to try to make money! Ban smoking and they will still come. The poker room is 100% smokefree (10 years now) and there still busy! |
