Casino Promotions Fixed at New York Race Track
YONKERS, NEW YORK --
Patrons who are drawn to Yonkers Rceway by the promotional giveaways and prizes might think twice in the future before heading to the track,as police charged the casino promotions manager with fixing the outcome of drawings. Donna Cronin is accused of having arranged to ensure her friends and family won cash and prizes given away by the casino as promotional marketing to draw gamblers.
Two other employees of the Empire Casino were also charged as larcenists, with Cronin alleged to have stolen $100,000 in money and gifts. The other two were accused of taking value equal to $35,000 and $15,000.
"The majority of promotional contests were rigged in favor of family, friends and acquaintances," said Westchester County District Attorney Janet DiFiore. She asserted that players not involved in the scam "had no chance of winning those prizes."
Over 75 incidents are laid at Cronin's feet, and she is accused of using recruiters to bring in contestants and guaranteeing them wins in exchange for kickbacks.
Several occurrences alerted casino authorities of a potential problem as one woman last August won a $10,000 award in the morning and hit for a $250,000 giveaway that evening. Consumer complaints about a computer malfunction on a $350,000 draw led to state regulators ordering the casino to hire independent auditors to examine the situation.
Cronin could get as much as 15 years in jail, while her cohorts mat get as much as 7 years behind bars.
