Pennsylvanians Reap Benefits of Legalized Casino Gambling
HARRISBURG, PENNSYLVANIA --
Casino gambling has been legalized and operational in Pennsylvania for just over two years, and taxpayers are seeing enormous benefits from the revenues gaming has produced. Governor Ed Rendell says during the current fiscal year, state residents will pay $750,000,000 less in property taxes due to the burgeoning gambling industry.
Even better for the state, new casinos in the Philadelphia area aren't up and running yet. While many other states are looking at tax increases or loss of essential services, residents in the Keystone State can expect to see even more state projects funded by casino income.
According to Rendell, over two and a half million state homeowners have seen their property tax cut by as much as ten percent, thanks to the slot machines spinning at racinos. Another program will even further reduce taxes for almost 600,000 senior citizens.
Elderly residents who register for the program by June 30th will be eligible for discounts on this year's tax.
Pennsylvania has been noted by many gaming industry experts for doing a good job integrating slot casinos with race tracks. Unlike states where horse owners have feuded with casino personnel, Pennsylvania has developed a symbiotic relationship between the two that has benefited each, and clearly taxpayers as well.
