Foxwoods Casino Employees Reject Unionization
LEDYARD, CONNECTICUT --
Workers at Foxwoods Casino in Connecticut have voted against union organization. Bartenders and cocktail waitresses decided this week to deny the United Food and Commercial Workers Union the right to represent them in dealing with casino management.
Casino dealers elected last year to have the United Auto Workers represent them in negotiations, but so far union officials have not been able to reach a deal with gaming management.
The bar employees voted 207 against the union, and 133 in favor. Brain Petronella, president of the union, said his organization will continue attempts to enlist the casino employees, and hopes to gather enough support for a different result next time a vote is taken.
Unions have had some luck in organizing table dealers and other gambling workers in both Atlantic City and Las Vegas recently. But talks with casino management have nor resulted in contracts for the workers. At some New Jersey casinos, negotiations have gone on for over two years without a settlement.
Labor observers feel the lack of progress on those talks, as well as any perceivable change in conditions for gaming employees, may have been a factor in the vote against by servers.
