Seminole Tribe Sinks SeaEscape Casino in South Fla
MIAMI, FL --
With increased land-based casino competition and high operating costs, the South Florida casino day-cruise business is under water. There was once a time when these gambling boats held a unique competitive advantage in the marketplace. If you wanted to play slots or table games in a casino-like setting, without breaking any rules, the day-cruise casino boats were the place to be.
Fast forward about 10 years, these day-cruise casino boats have become as obsolete as adjusting rabbit-ears on top of a television set. All of this due to the rise of the Seminole Casino and its new compact with Florida Governor Charlie Christ.
The Seminole Casino in Hollywood has been an extemely huge hit with area gamblers. With Las Vegas-style slots, blackjack, poker, 4-star hotel, fine restaurants, concerts, sports, shopping, and night clubs, the Seminole Casino has completely eliminated the casino day-cruise niche.
In fact, just this week, SeaEscape announced it will be closing its doors to customers. SeaEscape was the last gambling boat operating in Dade/Broward area.
The company cited increased competition from land-based casinos and higher operating costs. The company had been a mainstay in the South Florida area with its day-cruises on schedule for more than 20 years.
Other businesses in South Florida have also felt the effects of legalized gambling in Broward and Dade Counties. Many claim the Seminole Casino in Hollywood has increased local crime, raised prostitution rates, and lowered property values in the area. The Seminole Casino is a multi-billion per year business in Broward County alone.
