Belmont Gambling Dampered by Preakness Results
BELMONT, NEW YORK --
Being the third of the Triple Crown races gives the Belmont Stakes a chance in many years to draw the suspense and attention of the gambling crowd, when the same horse wins both the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness Stakes. The danger for Belmont officials is the drop in public interest when the Triple Crown has already been ruled out, and no other storyline emerges to capture the collective imagination.
Lookin at Lucky's victory this past Saturday no only ended Super Saver's fortnight of pretension to the Triple Crown, it also caused thousands of casual gamblers to turn away from horse racing until next year. While the Derby can set off a month of resuscitation for horse race wagering, the end of the pursuit for abnother Crown holder usually means a fading from general concern.
Last year's races didn't have a horse looking to sweep the races, but jockey Calvin Borel's switch from Derby winner Mine That Bird to Preakness victor Rachel Alexandra allowed the possibility of a jockey Crown, drawing bettors to speculate on whether Borel could bring Mine That Bird to a Belmont victory.
Although Borel and Mine fell just short on the long course, the annual May rebirth of racing as a source of national interest held up. But this year's charge by Lookin at Lucky begins a withdrawal of attention, and the announcement that neither Lookin nor Super Saver will race at Belmont will mean only racing enthusiasts are likely to gamble on the New York race.
Thirty-two years without a Triple Crown winner means the tension when a horse becomes eligible will remain intense, but the expectation of greatness is leaving gambling handles down when only very good horses are entered.
