Bally's Casino Fined Record Amount For Underaged Gambling
ATLANTIC CITY, NEW JERSEY --
Bally's Casino in Atlantic City received the largest fine ever imposed for allowing underaged gambling this week. The New Jersey Casino Control Commission levied a fine of $157,500 against the casino for allowing twenty-year-old Candeda Simpson to gamble multiple times over a month in 2006.
Simpson was identified only after being approached by an investigator from the Division of Gaming Enforcement, who suspected she was too young to be playing.
Simpson had previously been caught attempting to gamble underage in January of 2006, at the Sands.
Commission members say the fine needed to be substantial, as records indicate Simpson played on 137 different occasions during a three-week period, and yet was never asked for proof of age by casino personnel.
The previous highest fine for this offense was given to the Borgata Casino, for allowing a nineteen-year-old to acquire over $1000 in gambling comps.
Bally's officials insist that training and regulations regarding age identification have been considerably tightened since the incident. Meanwhile, Las Vegas casinos eye the eighteen-to-twenty-one market as rumors float of a possible drop in the Legal Nevada gambling age.
