Hilton Casino Fined for Allowing Minor to Gamble
ATLANTIC CITY, NEW JERSEY --
The Hilton Casino in Atlantic City received the second-largest fine in New Jersey history for underage gambling Wednesday. State regulators assessed a $115,000 levy against the gaming resort for violations related to unchecked minor participation.
Regulators are demanding stiffer controls by casinos and security, cracking down hard when violations are discovered. Last year Bally's Atlantic City was fined $157,500 for being caught with underage gamblers present.
State laws have also been tweaked to help make securing casinos easier for operators. Security personnel now have the right to detain violators, including minors, until police arrive. Previously, they could only eject anyone apprehended playing underage.
Also, players who are underage now face a fine of their own. Under older policies, there was no reason for minors caught attempting to gamble not to just try again, as they bore no burden if caught.
The fine against the Hilton was placed by the New Jersey Casino Control Commission after the casino did not fight state findings. The case involved a Brooklyn man who used a fake birth date to gamble, even though he was only 19.
