A Portion of Labor Peace for Atlantic City Casinos
ATLANTIC CITY, NEW JERSEY --
Six casinos in Atlantic City have reached accord with hotel and restaurant workers and their union, allowing the gambling town at least partial labor peace. The two-year deal was approved in a landslide by members of Unite Here's Local 54, representing workers at over half New Jersey's casinos.
The union, which organizes housekeepers, food workers, and dishwashers, among other employees, followed the course of negotiations at four other Atlantic City casinos, meaning the non-gaming employees in the town have set contracts. Unite Here members voted with 96 percent in favor of the new arrangements, which include a wage freeze for the first year.
The quick settlements with unions representing the hotel and food workers is in stark contrast to negotiations with the United Auto Workers, the union representing dealers at several casinos in the city. Not only have talks continued for two years without substantive result, but some casinos have employees pressing for a revote on the decision to organize.
Casinos involved in the new contract include the three Trump casinos, Trump Plaza, Trump Taj Mahal, and Trump Marina; the Atlantic City Hilton; Resorts; and the Tropicana.
Both sides agreed the deal would be a good package, with casino officials saying a done deal allows financial certainty for the future, while union leaders say the freeze can be offset by hourly increases in the second year of the deal.
