Atlanta City Council Wants Casinos
ATLANTA, GEORGIA --
The City Council of Atlanta voted unanimously to support a plan to bring slot machines to the historic Underground Atlanta region. The civic group hopes their recommendation will carry weight with the Georgia Lottery Board, which is considering a casino proposal for the shopping complex.
State law would not allow card games or table gambling a la Las Vegas casinos, but video lottery terminals fall under the board's discretion. Underground Atlanta is a retail and restaurant complex occupying an historical site, and city officials would love to generate more revenue from the area.
Dan O'Leary, current leaseholder of the complex, submitted a plan to the state involving the creation of a VLT casino, along with a hotel and refurbishment and upscaling of shops and restaurants.
Some tenants were opposed to the plan, preferring to fight for full casino gambling. With slot-style Video lottery terminals, some feel the level of player attracted will neither increase overall business nor bring much more money to the center.
Council spokesmen said the casino plan may help draw conventions. The mayor also endorsed the plan.
