Aqueduct Casino Back to Bidding Process
NEW YORK, NEW YORK --
Once again, the state of New York is taking bids for the right to operate casino gambling at Aqueduct Race Track. The announcement that bids are being accepted marks the fourth attempt in a little over five years to place a gaming operator at the famed New York horse racing venue.
Previous bidding processes have been marked by delays and heavy backroom politicking, leading to withdrawal of such prominent candidates as Steve Wynn. Governor David Paterson's first selection, Delaware North, couldn't meet financial deadlines and forfeited its award.
Then, Paterson chose Aqueduct Entertainment Group, only to face accusations he favored AEG based on personal connections between himself and AEG associates Jay-Z and Reverend Floyd Flake. That award collapsed amidst legislative rumblings and rumors of federal investigations.
Three bidders entered the laterst round of jockeying for the casino rights, including the partnership between the Seminole-controlled Hard Rock and a New York real estate group. Penn National, which had complained about the AEG decision, returned, and Genting New York joined the process.
The New York Lottery is expected to make a recommendation as to which bid is best for the state by the beginning of August. According to the New York Times, an Aqueduct casino could create over $1 million a day in gambling revenue for the state.
